Ed Boon confirms NetherRealm will not be at The Game Awards

Back in December 2018, Mortal Kombat 11 was announced at The Game Awards in a fun and surprising manner. Four years on and fans have been hoping to see NetherRealm’s next game at the upcoming 2022 Game Awards. Unfortunately, according to studio founder Ed Boon, this will not be the case.

Taking to Twitter, Ed Boon said “4 years ago at the Game Awards we managed to pull off a surprise announcement of MK11, which turned out great. Perhaps too great, as many assumed we'd repeat that trick for our next game. Thank you for the anticipation, but we're not ready to announce the next NRS game yet.”

Boon had been recently teasing NRS’ next game, claiming that it will either be Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12 – with fans as a consequence hoping to see the game at the upcoming Game Awards. With it having been almost 4 years since the release of MK11, NRS’ next title has taken longer to develop than any other previous game by the studio.

While unfortunate that we will have to wait longer to find out what exactly the team has been working on, hopefully it will ultimately be worth the wait.
