The 2022 Game Awards will be much shorter than previous years

The Game Awards represents one of the final major gaming events to take place at the end of each year, with 2022’s show set to go live on Thursday the 8th of December. Ahead of the event, The Game Awards’ creator Goeff Keighley has confirmed that this year’s show will be significantly shorter than previous years.

The Game Awards has long been known for its lengthy runtime with 2021’s show lasting almost 4 whole hours when also including the pre-show. The TGA’s runtime has been a point of criticism in the past, and as part of a recent Twitter Spaces stream, Goeff Keighley confirmed that this year’s show will not be nearly as long, saying (as transcribed by ResetEra user Meelow):

“I won't say anything officially until we're through our rehearsals but we think it's going to be significantly shorter. we definitely have cut back pretty significantly in terms of the runtime on the show and just you know kind of fewer games, fewer bigger games that'll be in there and you know people always debate about are they presenting enough.”

It is interesting to see Keighley discussing the scope of the games set to be announced and shown off at the event. While it seems this year’s event will not match the size of previous shows, Keighley did tease some exciting news, claiming that:

“We've got some really great announcements. I think some really amazing studios around the world are participating in the show this year. There's some games that I've been hoping and wanting to show for a number of years that are finally ready this year to showcase to folks at The Game Awards, so we're very very happy with how that's coming together.”

As mentioned, previous shows did – in the eyes of some – outstay their welcome, and so it is exciting to see 2022’s Game Awards focusing on making a more streamlined show.
