Xbox One day one update will take about 20 minutes

Microsoft dug itself into quite a hole earlier this year with its Xbox One reveal. It wasn't so much that every idea was bad, family sharing would have been pretty cool, but other than that all of the restrictions and privacy concerns with Kinect just didn't seem worth it. After a massive backlash against not only the actual Xbox but also some things that were said in interviews ( this one in particular springs to mind), Microsoft chose to get rid of all of those restrictions:

  • Kinect isn't mandatory
  • No more server check-ins
  • Games are region free
  • We can play off-line
  • We can do whatever we want with our games

The only downside is the reversal will need a mandatory out of the box update the first time you turn it on and it's said to take about 20 minutes of downloading for the average user. That 20 minutes doesn't take install times into account either, so you might be waiting a while to play your brand new console with your brand new game, which may diminish initial excitement for your first play. In an interview with IGN, Chief Xbox One Platform Architect, Marc Whitten explained:

“We are optimizing Xbox One so that the day one update is as fast as possible. While we’re still finalizing the details, we expect that the download will take between 15 and 20 minutes for most users.”

The Xbox One will arrive on the 22nd of November at £429 with a bunch of launch titles that can be found here. Major Nelson did an unboxing a while back to show you what you can expect to find in the box and this kid did his own version over the weekend:

KitGuru Says: While it is a shame that you'll have to wait a while to finally play your new console it's not the end of the world, as long as Microsoft focuses on getting some quality games out within its first year, then maybe it can win some customers back.

  1. 20mins? how big is the update?

  2. 20 whole minutes to wait oh no the end of the world is coming…lol Anyways 20 minutes is a short wait time to get the food & snacks ready before digging into the new console. But I guess people will still complain about it even though MS pretty much caved in & gave people what they wanted. Now they will complain that in order to get onje feature they lost another or 20 minutes to wait is to long & MS should do something about it…lol
