Android dominating – 1 billion devices to ship in 2014

Android is set to continue its domination well into 2014 as analyst firm Gartner are predicting that 1 billion devices will ship next year.

This analysis includes products from mobile phones to desktop PC's. Their research shows that Microsoft are in second place with Apple close behind. These positions will hold for the next two years and Android will more than double their number of devices to more than one billion. Gartner also say that Apple devices will start to catch up to Windows in this time period.

Gartner Analyst Carolina Milanesi said “Although the numbers seem to paint a clear picture of who the winner will be when it comes to operating systems in the device market, the reality is that today ecosystem owners are challenged in having the same relevance in all segments. Apple is currently the more homogeneous presence across all device segments, while 90% of Android sales are currently in the mobile phone market and 85% of Microsoft sales are in the PC market.”

Tablet sales will continue to thrive, predictions say they will double by 2014, while ‘ultramobile' laptops will quadruple in sales.

Gartner said that desktop PCs and normal laptop sales will drop by 10.6% from last year to 305 million shipped globally this year.

Kitguru says: Android continues to dominate. Normally due to the pricing and excellent, customisable user interface.
