A leaker has recently found a curious entry on the Geekbench benchmark database. The system was an unreleased Lenovo workstation powered by an AMD engineering sample. Even if it isn't clearly identified, it was quickly brought to attention that, according to the ID, it should be an AMD Ryzen HEDT CPU, more specifically a 16-core Threadripper Pro 7955WX.

According to Benchleaks, the system had a 16-core CPU with a base clock speed of 4.5GHz and the ability to boost up to 5.3GHz. While the actual name of the CPU has yet to be revealed, Haong Anh Phu (via VideoCardz) claims that this OPN (product code) matches the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7955WX SKU, a previously unknown variant of the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 series.

The scores achieved by the CPU on Geekbench suggest it will outperform its predecessor, the Threadripper Pro 5955WX, in single-core performance by 25%. However, the multicore results in the Geekbench database show an up to 25% advantage in favour of the upcoming CPU.

This new platform will use Zen4 cores and introduce a new socket. As of now, the name of the socket is unclear, but it's believed to be a variant of the SP6 or SP5 sockets. As a result, the CPU series, codenamed “Storm Peak,” will bring DDR5 memory support, an upgrade above the previous-generation “Chagall” series, which only supported DDR4. AMD is expected to launch its new Threadripper Pro chips by the end of this quarter.

KitGuru says: Even if not gaming-oriented, it would be nice to see how an AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7955WX would perform in such scenarios.
