Halo Infinite to get ray-tracing in 2023

Long before Halo Infinite's 2021 launch, 343 Industries said that ray-tracing would be coming to the game in a post-launch update. Unfortunately, it looks like the game's upcoming RT support will be pretty basic.

Last night during AMD's RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT launch, the company revealed that ray-tracing is coming to Halo Infinite. 343 Industries has since confirmed this and clarified that RT support is planned to arrive in a March 2023 update.

Looking at the small amount of footage shown, it appears we'll be getting ray-traced shadows. We did not notice global illumination changes or additional reflections, and 343 has not yet confirmed the full breadth of its ray-tracing plans. With that in mind, we could potentially see more RT effects beyond shadows, but for now, it looks like that's all we'll be getting.

The ray-tracing upgrade will go live in March 2023, alongside Halo Infinite's delayed third season. Next week, there will be a Halo Infinite ‘Winter Update', which will carry the game through until the next full season next year.

KitGuru Says: RT Shadows are pretty commonly used as they are less taxing on the GPU compared to reflections. However, RT Shadows are also a much more subtle effect, so I don't think this will be a particularly transformative upgrade.
