Far Cry 5 current-gen update brings boosted resolution to Xbox

As part of Far Cry 5’s fifth anniversary celebrations, Ubisoft teased that the game would be getting an update for current-gen consoles. While details were light at the time, the update is now live and brings with it a boost to 60fps for all consoles – and an increase in resolution for Xbox.

Making the announcement on Twitter (and elaboarting further on their blog), the official Far Cry page said “You've been waiting long enough… Welcome to Hope County! Experience Far Cry 5 in native 60 FPS – available for PS5 & Xbox Series consoles … NOW!”

In addition to the update, Far Cry 5 will be getting a free weekend for all running from the 23rd until the 27th of March with seemingly no restrictions.

While this update is merely a patch and not a bespoke current-gen release, interestingly it would seem the Xbox versions of Far Cry 5 have received a boost in resolution on top of the framerate bump, with Series S running at a native 1920×1080 (instead of the Xbox One’s 1440×1080).

Ubisoft also states that the Series X has seen a boost to a native 2160p – though analysis of the original Xbox One X version by Digital Foundry back during the game’s release showed that Far Cry 5 already ran at a native 4K. The PS5 version meanwhile retains its PS4 Pro resolution of 2880×1620 while seeing the same boost to 60fps.

Increased resolution or not, it is always exciting to see older titles get updated to support newer hardware, even if it is a simple patch as opposed to more bespoke upgrades. Hopefully Ubisoft continues to patch more of their games.
