AMD Ryzen Z2 APU to pack up to 8 CPU cores and 16 GPU CUs

AMD is reportedly gearing up for an exciting release for the gaming handheld market, with its new line of APUs set to launch next year. The upcoming Ryzen Z2 series will take over from Ryzen Z1, which has powered some of the most popular handheld consoles, including the ROG Ally and Legion Go.

According to Golden Pig Upgrade (via HXL), the Ryzen Z2 series will come equipped with up to 8x CPU cores (3x Zen5 + 5x Zen5c), 16x RDNA 3.5 CUs, and 16MB of L3 cache.

In addition to the Z2 Extreme, AMD is expected to unveil the Ryzen Z2 (Hawk Point) and Z2G (Rembrandt) models, likely incorporating 12 CUs. The CPU core count for each of these APUs isn't clear yet but expect up to eight cores. Assuming AMD's GPU architecture dictates the silicon choices, gamers will have three potential options: RDNA3.5 (Z2E), RDNA3 (Z2), and RDNA2 (Z2G).

Reports suggest the first devices using the Ryzen Z2 series APUs will be announced in early 2025.
