A developer has decided to make a PC port of Mario Kart Wii from the ground up. The project has been announced as Mario Kart Wiicompiled, marking the release of the first static recompilation of Mario Kart Wii for PC.
The developer is a YouTuber named patchzy (via XDA Developers). The project's first public beta is scheduled for release in August 2026 and will include online multiplayer support, along with optional integration with Retro Rewind, a mod that adds over 200 tracks to the game. While patchzy intends to share further technical details soon, an announcement trailer showcasing real-time gameplay from the PC build has already been released and can be found below.
As with similar static recompilation projects, the port will not feature high-quality textures or updated character models. Instead, players can expect modern conveniences like native resolution support up to 4K and an unlocked framerate. Because the project compiles code statically and does not distribute copyrighted Nintendo assets, players must provide their own original Wii ROM file to run the game. This approach typically protects recompilation projects from direct legal takedowns.
KitGuru says: Static recompilations are becoming an incredible way to preserve and enhance classic console games on PC without running into immediate legal hurdles.
