To me at least, Star Wars: The Old Republic is the most underrated MMO still going. With its next major update just on the horizon, BioWare has shared new details, including new difficulty options, a raised level cap and new zones to explore.
In Star Wars: The Old Republic – Masters of the Force, players will get to run through the new “Galaxy in Chaos” storyline, which is billed as a new era for the MMO. During this new questline, Darth Malgus has caused unrest throughout the galaxy, igniting new battles between the Republic and the Sith Empire. During this journey, players will get to visit Ryloth, a brutal new planet that also doubles as the homeworld of the Twi'lek race.
The Masters of the Force update will also introduce new difficulty options. Players will be able to choose between Story, Veteran and Master modes, which affect all overworld content. That means new players can play through the story at a lower difficulty while they level up and learn the game, while longtime players can seek out a greater challenge. Other MMOs, like The Elder Scrolls Online, have also successfully implemented difficulty modes in recent years.
The content update is wrapped up by a new 3-boss Operation, in which players will take on the descendants of Darth Nul. If you want an early peek at this operation in action, then you can jump onto the Public Test Realm and fight the first boss right now.
The Masters of the Force update also raises the level cap to 85, introduces new combat balance changes, new abilities for all disciplines, a reworked levelling experience, a new gearing system and other QoL changes.
KitGuru Says: SWTOR has some of the best Star Wars story content, some of which ties back into the old KOTOR games. If you've never played it, it is worth trying, even as a free-to-play player – although I would recommend subscribing for one month at least to unlock ‘preferred' status, which grants you permanent access to all expansions for a low price.
