For the last few years, Sledgehammer Games has been the odd one out in the Call of Duty-sphere, with Activision primarily focusing on Treyarch's Black Ops series and Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare. Microsoft may have a new plan for Sledgehammer in the near future though, one that involves Halo.
Since rebranding as Halo Studios, Microsoft has kept the team pretty small. Much of Campaign Evolved's development was outsourced, and Microsoft may lean further in that direction soon. According to Rebs Gaming, who has been very active with Halo leaks over the past year, Sledgehammer Games was working on a prototype for its own Halo project back in June.
That initial prototype was later scrapped according to the YouTuber, but Microsoft is reportedly still considering having Sledgehammer handle a new Halo game. This would be a multiplayer game though, not a full campaign + multiplayer offering.
Such a move from Microsoft would fit well with its current plans to restructure its studios to pour more resources into its most important franchises. This has already included a big shake-up of Bethesda, bringing in Obsidian to help out on a new Fallout game, and Zenimax Online Studios is now helping out on the next Elder Scrolls game too.
KitGuru Says: There have been several multiplayer-only Halo projects that have failed to get off the ground in recent years. Perhaps having a major studio like Sledgehammer behind one will finally lead to a release.
