Witcher Remake on hold for new Witcher 3 expansion and The Witcher 4

CD Projekt has provided an update on the status of The Witcher Remake, confirming that development has been folded into work on The Witcher 4 for the time being.

In a statement to GameSpot, the studio explained that Fool’s Theory is now primarily focused on Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, with a smaller part of the team assisting on The Witcher 4. As a result, The Witcher Remake is waiting on assets, tools and pipelines being built for The Witcher 4 before full development can resume.

Signs of this shift first appeared when joint‑CEO Michał Nowakowski mentioned roadblocks for the remake in an interview with The Game Business, citing technology dependencies tied to The Witcher 4. CD Projekt is transitioning from RED Engine to Unreal Engine, and The Witcher 4 will define the baseline for how the series operates on Unreal. The Witcher Remake, announced in 2022, appears to have been caught up in that transition.

Fool’s Theory is currently leading development on Songs of the Past, unveiled at Gamescom, while also supporting work on The Witcher 4. Once those projects are complete, development on the remake is expected to ramp up again.

KitGuru Says: The Witcher 1 was a pretty small game so remaking it shouldn't be a huge task, but it sounds like Songs of the Past and Witcher 4 are the clear priorities right now.
