Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is the highest rated entry in 25 years

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has been a long time coming, with the previous entry in this long running series releasing all the way back in 2019. Fortunately, it seems the wait has been worth it. Ahead of the game’s official arrival next week, critic reviews for Wings of Theve have now gone live – with the title landing as the 2nd highest rated entry of all time; the best in 25 years.

With a Metacritic score of 87 and an OpenCritic rating of 88, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve just narrowly misses the top spot franchise-wide, with 2001’s Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies remaining at number 1 (with a score of 89).

Even so, for many this latest entry represents the best the franchise has to offer, with particular praise being given toward its campaign; cinematic gameplay; “exhilarating” combat and of course, its soundtrack.

That said, all is not perfect, with some reviews taking issue with elements of the story as well as aspects of its multiplayer. Regardless, for many Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve serves as a culmination three decades in the making, being described as “the franchise’s final form.”

Here’s to hoping long-time fans of the series feel just as positively about Wings of Theve when it officially launches next week on the 2nd of October.
