Infinity Ward promises to tone down crossover skins in Modern Warfare 4

In recent years Call of Duty has gotten an increasing amount of flack for their games’ visual identities being ruined by an abundance of weird, wacky and unexpected cosmetics. 2024’s Black Ops 6 was perhaps the worst in this regard, featuring crossovers with the likes of American Dad and Beavis and Butthead; both of which included distractingly different art styles to the rest of the game. While last year’s Black Ops 7 already took steps forward in this regard, the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 is promising to remain “authentic” “grounded” and “transparent.”

With Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 now having been officially announced, the lead dev team at Infinity Ward have started to be more active online, responding to fans while also addressing various concerns.

With regards to cosmetics, Infinity Ward took to Twitter to claim that “Every aspect of Modern Warfare 4 is anchored in the game's narrative. Every feature, every decision needs to feel authentic to what Modern Warfare is, and that includes cosmetics and collabs. We're committed to keeping it grounded and transparent, and we want to hear from you on what you'd like to see in our game.”

While we have yet to see what IW have in mind for MW4 throughout its live-service support period, the team have set the tone, confirming that skins in the vein of Nicki Minaj and Beavis and Butt-Head won’t be featured.

In response to one sceptical player who joked that the game will likely include “Lady Gaga, Omni-Man, or some other goofy collaboration” the official Call of Duty Community Manager page replied with “No Lady Gaga. No Omni-Man. No Teletubbies. No SpongeBob. Keep the receipts.”

As mentioned, Call of Duty have already toned back their cosmetics with Black Ops 7. That said, the game still includes plenty of non-military themed skins and blueprints. As such, it will be interesting to see how far Infinity Ward are choosing to take MW4’s grounded visual identity – especially as the Seasons progress.
