New iPod Touch with A5 SoC chip

Apple have today released a digital user guide for their 5th generation iPod Touch. According to AppleInsider there is a separate benchmark which shows an A5 processor running at 800mhz, giving performance figures close to the iPhone 4S.

The Japanese language Apple blog ‘Mac Otakara' has posted screenshots (above) which show the new app ‘system status' running on the new device.

If the images are accurate then the new iPod is using the Apple A5 system on a chip based on ARM's Cortex A9 architecture.

We can see the screen resolution is 1136 x 640 pixels with a pixel density of 326 ppi, matching the iPhone 5 4 inch Retina display. The battery is slightly weaker than the latest iPhone battery, measuring 930mAh power, compared to 1,434 mAh in the iPhone 5. No need for the extra power as the iPod isn't dealing with 3G and other broadcast signals.

The new iPod will feature a 5 MP rear facing camera and the front a 1.2 MP unit for Facetime over Wifi.
