HP outbids Dell for storage specialist 3Par

A week after Dell agrees to buy 3Par for $1.13bn, HP throws a spanner into the works by offering $1.5bn for the storage specialist.

3Par specialise in software for organising data on corporate servers and provide their services on a subscription based service over the  web.  Their software is designed to make the most of available space on data storage hardware  to minimise costs using a technique called ‘thin provisioning' by which extra capacity can be added as needed.

With this aquisition, HP would increase their revenue from data storage to around 13% of total.
