Pirate Bay users help director get his film seen

The most oft-cited reason for movie and music lobby groups to go after torrent sites, is that they take money away from artists, by “stealing,” content. However what those same lobby groups don't talk about, is how copyright law can do the same thing and that in those situations, piracy can save the day.

Take the recent example of Dutch director Martin Koolhoven (best name ever), who released a film back in 1999 called Suzy Q. Proud of his own work as most people are, Koolhoven wants people to continue to be able to see it if they want, but unfortunately, due to the film featuring music from huge stars of the last century like The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix, nobody has paid the licensing rights for years, so it can't legally be played on TV, or in movie theatres, or released on DVD.

Taking to Twitter to voice his frustration, Koolhoven said offhandedly, “Kan iemand niet gewoon een keer Suzy Q op Pirate Bay gooien?,” or, ‘can someone just upload Suzy Q to The Pirate Bay?” Someone was more than happy to oblige. There's now four or five different copies up there with enough seeds to guarantee you'll have it within a few hours even if your connection isn't the best.

Koolhoven insists that he isn't lining himself up to be the face of piracy, but that he was just an artist wanting people to see the art that he'd made. Copyright law was making it so that that would never happen, but thanks to piracy the film won't die.

“I didn’t want to become the poster boy for the download-movement. All I wanted was for people to be able to see my film,” Koolhoven said in an interview with TorrentFreak.

However, Koolhoven might talk like an artist, but he certainly walks like a pirate. When the uploaded versions quality wasn't as good as he'd like, Koolhoven went ahead and uploaded a copy himself to Youtube, under his own name.
