Sonic Origins announced, bringing the classic games to modern platforms

During the early 2000s, SEGA released a number of Sonic the Hedgehog collections, offering many of the blue blur’s adventures in one convenient package. Over the years however, these collections subsided. Now they are back with the Sonic Origins, a collection of Sonic’s classic games, enhanced with new features.

During the recent Sonic 30th anniversary stream, alongside a teaser for the next mainline Sonic game, SEGA revealed Sonic Origins, which will bring Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles, and CD to modern systems in one package. Though little was revealed about this compilation, SEGA did note that the collection would come with “added content and features.”

One of these new features is widescreen support, which will be the first time that Sonic 3&K has received official support in that manner. Currently, Sonic 1,2 and CD are all available in widescreen, however only on mobile platforms (aside from CD, which also came to Steam). Sonic 3&K however never saw an updated release – likely due to issues surrounding the game’s soundtrack.

With the game now coming to modern systems, it will be interesting to see whether the soundtrack has been altered to circumvent this, or whether the legal issues have finally been resolved. Furthermore, beyond widescreen support, what other enhancements are added will also be interesting to see. Sonic Origins will release in 2022.
