PUBG’s ‘next-gen’ update launches tomorrow – though it is lacking on PS5

PUBG: Battlegrounds remains one of the most popular battle royale shooters currently, especially in the wake of its free-to-play release. That being said, until now, the game offered no upgrades for PS5 and Series X|S users. Launching tomorrow, the ‘next-gen’ update brings many improvements across the board – though much less so on PS5.

From tomorrow, the 12th of July, PUBG players on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will benefit from a number of graphical and performance improvements. On Xbox Series X, the game will now run at a 4K resolution while offering both FXAA (fast approximate anti-aliasing) and TAA (temporal anti-aliasing). The series S offers similar settings except for the resolution, which has been reduced to 1440p – though is still much improved over the previous offering of just 1080p.

The PlayStation 5 also sees many improvements, though due to it still being a native PS4 app with no bespoke PS5 version, the resolution is only bumped to a modest 1440p while adding TAA and FXAA, putting it in line with the Series S version despite the PS5 being more powerful.

Initial reactions to the announcement of the PS5 version seems to be disappointment, especially as this update is coming a year and a half after the launch of the systems (which already added 60fps to PUBG at the time). Of course, 1440p is still a respectable resolution, but it is understandable if PS5 owners are left disappointed by this update. Hopefully the game gets a proper and bespoke PS5 version at some point in the future.
