Tencent has reportedly scrapped plans to launch its own VR headset

Last year, it came to light that Tencent was working on its own VR headset, in part to get in on the Metaverse trend. Now, it would seem that those plans have been scrapped.

According to a Reuters report, Tencent has cancelled its own VR hardware plans. Despite setting up a VR business unit and hiring a few hundred employees last year, Tencent now has concerns that it won't be able to turn a profit quickly enough.

If you have seen how much money Zuckerburg is burning in an attempt to bring the ‘metaverse' to life, this shouldn't come as a surprise. Even Facebook with its vast resources has been unable to turn VR into a dominant platform for gaming or business use cases.

Tencent's VR platform would have included games, in addition to non-gaming applications. Tencent may potentially revisit VR in the future if the market for it starts to blossom, but the company seems to have shied away from trying to lead the charge.

KitGuru Says: While VR continues to hold a lot of promise, there are still plenty of issues getting in the way of mass adoption. One of those issues is the high price of hardware, but ultimately, it also comes down to a lack of killer titles. We thought Half-Life: Alyx would usher in a new wave of high-quality VR games, but unfortunately three years on, that hasn't materialised yet.
