Nintendo is working on a live-action Zelda movie

For years, we've been hearing rumours that Nintendo is planning a Hollywood adaptation of the Legend of Zelda franchise. Now out of the blue, Nintendo has confirmed exactly that, with plans for a live-action movie.

Unlike the Super Mario Bros movie, which was an animated movie, Nintendo's Zelda film will be live-action. It might be difficult to translate Zelda into a real-world setting but with the film being produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, alongside former Chief Creative Officer at Marvel, Avi Arad, we should see plenty of care put into the production and presentation.

Nintendo and Arad Productions will be producing the film, while Maze Runner director, Wes Ball, will direct the film. Nintendo says it is “heavily involved” in the production, with the film entering development this year. Currently, there is no word on cast or a release date, so it will be a while before we get to see the Zelda movie on screen.

Nintendo found success in the film industry this year with the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which generated over $1.3 billion in global box office sales. The Legend of Zelda franchise has shipped over 130 million units in its lifetime.
