Insomniac won’t force you to play as secondary characters in Wolverine

Insomniac has confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will feature just one playable character, putting the full focus on Wolverine himself rather than introducing any side‑character gameplay sections. This clarification arrives after fans speculated that Jean Grey’s appearance in the recent story trailer might hint at a playable sequence.

Speaking with GamesRadar, senior project director Jess Reiner‑Reed and head of technology Mike Fitzgerald addressed the moment directly. When asked about the Jean Grey scene, both developers responded: “Wolverine is our only playable character.” Fitzgerald added that while characters like Sabretooth, Mystique and Jean Grey will appear during combat encounters and assist with team‑up moves, none of them will take control away from the player.

Insomniac explained that side characters will still play meaningful roles in both story and gameplay, dynamically supporting Wolverine in fights and contributing to the overall team dynamic. However, the studio’s priority is to maintain a consistent action experience centred entirely on Wolverine’s abilities, avoiding any shifts in pacing or mechanics.

This marks a clear departure from the structure of Insomniac’s Spider‑Man titles. While both Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 are well-received games, they both include sections where you are forced to play as a character who isn't Spider-Man. In particular, the Mary Jane sections of both games are consistently highlighted as the worst part of both titles, a sentiment that I do agree with. Honestly, I didn't like the constant switching between Peter and Miles during the Spider-Man 2 campaign either – and I'm someone who likes Miles, but the perspective shifts were jarring and often unexpected.

KitGuru Says: Insomniac is rumoured to be planning an X-Men game after Wolverine, so having some other mutants be briefly playable wouldn't have been the worst thing. However, after Spider-Man 2 and the constant shifting perspectives, I am glad to see Insomniac chose to go in this direction instead.
