Blizzard revives Heroes of the Storm with new hero update

We knew to expect the return of StarCraft at BlizzCon this week, but we weren't expecting to see a revival of Heroes of the Storm. Blizzard's MOBA game is officially back, with a new hero joining the roster this month.

In a surprise announcement at BlizzCon this weekend, Blizzard revealed Xal'Atath, the latest hero for Heroes of the Storm. Xal'Atath arrives from the Warcraft franchise and marks the first new hero added to the game since 2020.

Blizzard largely stopped working on and promoting Heroes of the Storm after 2020, with most updates limited to bug fixes and balance tweaks. This was despite the fact that many players considered HOTS one of the strongest MOBAs on the market, and for a time, its esports scene looked like it could stand alongside Dota 2 and League of Legends.

Xal'Atath will not be the only new addition either. Blizzard has confirmed that a second new hero is already in development, although details have not yet been shared. For now, players can look forward to Xal'Atath’s arrival on the 28th of September.

KitGuru Says: Heroes of the Storm had a passionate community and a genuinely strong design philosophy, so seeing Blizzard return to it is a welcome surprise. With new heroes now on the way, it will be interesting to see how far this revival goes.
