AMD and Intel are both set to launch new DDR5-supported platforms soon, which will drive up interest in DDR5 memory modules. Up to now, DDR5 memory has been significantly more expensive than DDR4, but it looks like big price drops are coming to help push adoption of the new standard. 

In July alone, DDR5 memory chip prices dropped by 20%, but that's not the end of this fall. According to Digitimes Asia, memory vendors have started to offload their DDR5 chip inventories to channel distributors. With distributors' stock increasing and demand remaining low, prices will be forced to reduce even further.

In the past, DDR5 memory modules would cost distributors 200% more than your average DDR4 module. At the moment, the difference is “only” about 100%. Moving into 2023, it is expected that DDR5 memory will hit its ‘sweet spot’.

You can now grab 16GB of DDR5 memory for less than £60. However, if prices keep tending down, grabbing this much memory for less than £50 should be doable.

KitGuru says: The DDR5 memory price drop is coming at the right time for those looking to upgrade. However, it is also worth noting that if Intel and AMD’s new platforms are successful, demand for DDR5 will also increase, so it could be a while before pricing truly settles.
