Nintendo to release flame red 3DS in September

Nintendo issued a press release today highlighting an upcoming ‘flame red' version of the 3DS.

The new colour will launch on September 9th alongside their new Star Fox 64 3D title. The new releases will be tied into the $169.99 retail price drop which comes into effect on 12th August in the United States.

Nintendo are continuing to supply the ‘Cosmo Black' and ‘Aqua Blue' versions, meaning that customers will have three colours to choose from when purchasing.

“Nintendo 3DS is poised to be on fire for the holidays, with its new suggested retail price, great games and our new Flame Red color,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “With major upcoming releases in the Star Fox, Pokémon and Mario series, in addition to downloadable offerings from Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Video and Netflix, the system offers new and fun experiences to owners on a daily basis.”

The price drop has been prompted by less than stellar sales figures, and Nintendo president Satoru Iwata blamed the fast changing market place. We will see in a few months time if the price drop has helped to boost flagging sales levels.

With the release of Star Fox 64 3D, it may help shift more consoles, especially as the game has a massive cult following from the original release many years ago.
