As Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 celebrates its first anniversary, the game sales have reached 8 million copies. The title has rapidly become one of the most successful new IPs in recent history, proving that the appetite for turn-based RPGs is stronger than ever. Perhaps most impressively, it achieved these massive sales figures despite being available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.
The game's narrative and presentation have been the primary drivers of its critical acclaim. Set in a world inspired by Belle Époque France, players follow Gustave and his companions on a desperate journey to stop the Paintress, a being who annually “erases” an entire generation by painting a number on a distant monolith.
The sales number matches its award lineup. Expedition 33 has cemented itself in the history books by becoming only the second game ever to complete a “clean sweep” of the five major Game of the Year awards. It took home the top prize at the Golden Joysticks, D.I.C.E., The Game Awards, GDC, and the BAFTAs.
To mark the 8 million milestone and the game's first birthday, Sandfall has released a free anniversary update that adds new cosmetic options, including “Anniversary” hairstyles for the main cast.
