Fallout 76 finally gets its long-awaited current-gen update

Love it or hate it, Fallout 76 has received a great deal of support ever since the game’s initial launch all the way back in 2018. That said, the multiplayer-focused title remained one of the few ‘modern’ Bethesda games yet to receive a native current-gen update. Finally, a year on from its initial announcement, the long-awaited ‘Gen-9 Boost’ has officially arrived alongside Fallout 76’s Halloween-themed update.

Taking to their blog to detail the update, the team at Bethesda released the full set of patch notes for Fallout 76 version 1.7.26.13 – aka The Slasher. As can be gleaned from the name itself, the primary addition is a multi-week long horror-themed quest adding new lore and content (accessible by tuning into the ‘Breaking News’ broadcast station).

Alongside this, the update also brings with it a new ‘unique item crafting’ mechanic, letting players change and equip various legendary mods to their weapons/armour. Additionally, Fallout 76 will be bringing Legacy Seasons back into the limelight, running concurrently with the current Season; giving those who missed out the first time round an opportunity to experience and unlock past limited-time additions.

Fallout 76 Current-gen

For those on consoles, by far the biggest addition with this update is the long-awaited current-gen ports. Unfortunately, outside of the fact that Fallout 76 now runs natively on PS5 and Series X, the list of enhancements remains minimal:

  • 60FPS Target with VRR support
  • 4K resolution on Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro
  • 1440p resolution on PS5

While it remains a welcome update, both PS5 and Xbox Series X were already treated to a pseudo-upgrade back in 2023, bringing with it enhanced resolutions, an unlocked framerate and other minor visual enhancements via backwards compatibility. Given this fact, many were hoping to see Bethesda push the game further with its native update, possibly even adding an FOV slider (a feature which is available on the PC version of 76).

All that said, it is possible that future updates could make further use of the PS5 and Series X hardware, with Bethesda claiming that this latest patch should allow them “to more finely tune the game for Gen9 and Gen 8 hardware in the future.”
