Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update will increase 8-core CPU usage up to 90%

The highly anticipated 2.0 patch for Cyberpunk 2077, as well as the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion, are nearing release. As the game's creators put the final touches on it, some have gone to social media to provide additional insights, notably about CPU support improvements.

Filip Pierciski, a CD Projekt Red lead scene programmer, confirmed a game-changing upgrade. Cyberpunk 2077 will now leverage the full capability of higher-core-count CPUs. As such, 8-core CPUs may experience 90% usage, so don't be surprised if you see your processor getting hotter than before when playing Cyberpunk 2077 with the 2.0 update.

The developer even suggests running the Cinebench benchmark as a short test to ensure your system is stable and has a good enough cooling solution to handle high CPU usage for long periods of time. More importantly, the game will no longer need mods to benefit from SMT on Ryzen CPUs, resolving a long-standing problem for players who use these processors. However, if your CPU has more than 8 cores and supports HT or SMT, Pierciski recommends disabling the technology.

The Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update is expected to arrive alongside the Phantom Liberty expansion, releasing next week.

KitGuru says: Most systems will probably benefit from these CPU optimisations, but it will be interesting to see if SMT or HT have a negative impact on higher core-count chips.
