Dragon Quest 12 is still in development

Dragon Quest fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Series creator Yuji Horii has reaffirmed that Dragon Quest XII is still in active development, dispelling any recent doubts about its fate. The game, initially announced back in 2021, has been largely absent from the public eye since its initial teaser, leading to some understandable concern.

During a recent livestream with the radio program KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku (as reported by Automaton), Horii assured fans that the development team is “working hard on Dragon Quest XII”. While he didn't reveal any specific details about the game, this confirmation is welcome news for those wondering if it had been cancelled. Moreover, Horii stated that further information would be released gradually, though no timeline was shared.

This update follows a social media post from Horii last May, where he stated the team's intention to create a game “worthy of the final contributions of the two people who passed away”. He was referring to Dragon Quest character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama, both integral to the series' success and whose loss has profoundly impacted the development process. Horii's comments also come after Dragon Quest series producer Yu Miyake stepped down to lead Square Enix's mobile game division, which raised some questions about the status of Dragon Quest XII.

While concrete details remain scarce, we know a few things about Dragon Quest XII. During the series' 35th-anniversary livestream, Horii revealed that the iconic turn-based combat system would be reimagined and that the overall tone of the game would be darker and more mature than your typical Dragon Quest game.
