Opera GX has finally been released for Linux

After years of sustained community demand across subreddits and forums, Opera has officially released Opera GX for Linux. The gaming browser finally brings its suite of resource-limiting tools and gamer-centric aesthetics to the Linux ecosystem.

At launch, the browser officially supports Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and OpenSUSE-based distributions, with installation handled via native .deb and .rpm packages, while a Flatpak version is currently in development. The core appeal of the Linux version remains the GX Control Panel, which allows users to set hard caps on CPU, RAM, and network bandwidth. By preventing the browser from “eating” system resources, Opera GX ensures that the primary game or application maintains priority.

Additionally, the browser includes its sidebar integrations for Twitch and Discord, allowing users to monitor streams and chats without the performance overhead of keeping multiple standalone apps open. The customisation suite, GX Mods, is also available on the Linux version, offering over 10,000 community-created themes, sound effects, and shaders to match the highly personalised setups common in the Linux community.

Recognising that Linux users are often more privacy-conscious than their Windows counterparts, Opera has doubled down on its security credentials. Developed in Europe and fully GDPR compliant, Opera GX on Linux does not collect browsing history, location data, or search queries. The browser features a built-in ad and tracker blocker, along with an optional zero-log VPN. To provide further transparency, the VPN infrastructure has been independently audited by Deloitte, verifying that the service does not log user activity or originating IP addresses.

KitGuru says: The timing of this release couldn't be better, especially with the continued growth of Linux gaming via platforms like the Steam Deck and the rise of gaming-focused distros. Do you have a Linux system at home? Will you be trying Opera GX on it?
