Blizzard bringing 6v6 matches back to Overwatch

During the transition to Overwatch 2, Blizzard made the controversial decision to move away from the 6v6 gameplay of the first game. This was replaced with a streamlined 5v5 format and a limit of just one tank per team. Now, Blizzard is planning a pivot back to 6v6 gameplay.

Blizzard revealed that it was considering bringing back 6v6 matches earlier in 2024. Now, Blizzard will be testing it during the next Overwatch 2 season, 6v6 matches will be one of two test modes available next season, and Blizzard intends to “watch the results closely”.

In Overwatch 1, teams would typically be made up of two characters in each category, including two tanks. This often led to intense stand-offs between teams with well-thought character selections. With Blizzard moving away from 6v6 with Overwatch 2, it completely rebalanced all heroes from the original game. Another sweeping balance update should take place for the return of 6v6.

Blizzard has not announced plans to make 6v6 matches the new default, or even any plans to keep it in the game beyond the seasonal test mode. Ultimately, fan feedback will be a big influence there.
