Denuvo is suing someone for cracking their DRM

We've often seen companies go after leakers, cheaters and cheat makers, but we rarely see lawsuits against those who crack games for piracy. That changed this week with Denuvo filing a lawsuit against one of the most prolific Denuvo crackers.

As spotted by VGC, Denuvo has filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for Northern California against an individual known online as “voices38”, who has released cracks for more than 30 Denuvo‑protected games. The lawsuit names titles including 007 First Light, Hogwarts Legacy, Sonic Frontiers, Doom: The Dark Ages, Dead Space, Black Myth: Wukong and Stellar Blade as examples of games that were cracked and distributed. Despite this, the filing confirms that Denuvo doesn’t actually know who “voices38” is, labelling them as an “unknown individual or entity”.

To support its case, Denuvo has listed several Steam accounts, a Reddit account and a Discord ID that it claims are tied to the crack maker. With those identifiers included, the lawsuit could potentially give Denuvo the ability to subpoena Discord, Valve and Reddit for any information associated with those accounts.

You don’t have to look very hard to find voices38 commenting on the situation. They responded on Reddit to a post discussing the lawsuit, writing: “All is fine. Everything will continue as normal.”

KitGuru says: Given that voices38 is highly unlikely to be based in the United States, the lawsuit may have limited practical impact.
