Modder reimagines Skyrim as an RTS game

I've never really put much thought into the idea of turning The Elder Scrolls into an RTS game but one modder certainly has and now with a Skyrim RTS mod on the cusp of release, the idea sure makes a lot of sense.

Skyrim has had a very healthy modding scene since its release, with hundreds of thousands of people still playing the game now more than a decade later. The Skyrim RTS reimagining is not actually a mod for Skyrim, but rather, a mod for Age of Empires 2.

Reddit user Grouchy_Bluejay4511 uploaded screenshots of his custom Skyrim Age of Empires 2 modification this week, showcasing recreations of Skyrim's famous cities. Obviously, Age of Empires 2 assets are in use here, so it won't look exactly the same but each city is designed pretty faithfully.

In the mod, players will play as one of the holds and fight for control over Skyrim. The mod will even include its own quests and new unique characters, so it is essentially an RPG-infused custom scenario for Age of Empires 2.

As Microsoft now owns both Age of Empires and The Elder Scrolls, it is less likely that this mod's release will trigger legal issues. The mod isn't available to download just yet but should become available on the Steam Workshop soon.

KitGuru Says: While not a mod for Skyrim directly, this is certainly one of the cooler mod ideas I've seen in recent years. I hope someone at Bethesda or Microsoft is taking notes because an official Elder Scrolls-based RTS would be great to see, particularly during the long wait for The Elder Scrolls VI.
