Modders bring multiplayer back to The Last of Us Part 2 on PC

A new fan‑made mod is aiming to bring multiplayer combat back to The Last of Us Part II on PC, filling the gap left after Naughty Dog cancelled its own official multiplayer mode for the game.

As you would expect, as this is a mod, there is zero console support here. In order to play, you'll need a gaming PC, as well as a copy of The Last of Us Part 2 on Steam. The mod has been in development since January and won't be available to download until September, but for now, the creators have shared the following gameplay footage:

While still early, the footage shows players engaging in real‑time PvP encounters using the game’s existing combat systems, effectively resurrecting the multiplayer component from the first Last of Us game on consoles. Fans had hoped to see a very similar mode for The Last of Us Part 2, but the project evolved into its own standalone multiplayer game and was eventually cancelled entirely. Despite fan outcry, Naughty Dog has not mentioned The Last of Us multiplayer since then.

Whether or not Sony actually allows this mod to get all the way to release is another matter. While rare, cease and desist letters have been sent to mod makers in the past.

KitGuru Says: This could be a fun addition to The Last of Us Part 2, but I could only really foresee fans of the original game's multiplayer going through the effort to install it. Many of those people are likely still on PlayStation and may not be able to play this mod anyway.
