Star Citizen releases $5000 ‘concept’ ship as game crosses $1 billion in funding

Star Citizen has been in development for over a decade at this stage. Since the initial crowdfunding campaign, around 6.5 million registered players have pumped more than $1 billion into the project, but the main game remains in alpha.

Since the initial crowdfunding campaign Star Citizen has raised the majority of its money through selling various ships, some of which have not yet been implemented into the game. As the $1 billion milestone was reached over the weekend, Cloud Imperium Games also announced a new $5000 spaceship for purchase, although the ship, known as the Anvil Odin capital ship, is currently in the concept stage and does not have a known release date.

According to CIG, the new Odin ship represents a major milestone for the Star Citizen team, as it is the final vehicle stretch goal established in Star Citizen's initial crowd funding campaign. As spotted by Eurogamer, one brave Star Citizen fan has already shelled out the $5000 for the new ship, saying that “despite the game being buggy and broken at times” they are still happy with the game due to the number of hours they get out of it.

Star Citizen is a sandbox MMO, allowing players to group up and fly ships across a massive, simulated galaxy. Aside from the main Star Citizen game, CIG is also working on Star Citizen: Squadron 42, a single-player campaign with a star-studded cast of Hollywood voice actors. The game is apparently in ‘the closing stages' of development now, but there is no final release date yet. Fans are hoping for a 2026 release, but CIG has yet to confirm this.

If you are curious about the state of Star Citizen and want to see it in action for yourself, then there is currently a free trial running until the 27th of May, allowing you to get into the game without making any purchases. During the free trial, you will get an RSI Aurora MK11 ship to fly for free, although other ships are also available to rent using in-game currency.
