Street Fighter set to get a new film or TV show

It looks like we are heading towards a new Street Fighter movie. It has been reported that Legendary Entertainment has recently acquired the film and TV rights for Capcom's classic fighting game.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary Entertainment nabbed the rights and will now work with Capcom on future adaptations. However, no further details are available at this time, so we don't know if the plan is to produce a film and a TV show, or just one of those two options. No script writers, showrunners, directors or casting decisions have been revealed either.

There have been other live-action film adaptations of Street Fighter in the past. The original Street Fighter film released in 1994, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. The movie was not well received critically or commercially. In 2009, another attempt was made with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which also didn't do particularly well.

Street Fighter itself is a well-known fighting game series, which began life in arcades before transitioning to home consoles. The next major game in the series, Street Fighter 6, is due to release later this year.

KitGuru Says: Hollywood videogame adaptations have improved a lot over the last decade, but they can still be hit or miss. It'll be interesting to see if we end up with an on-going series or a standalone film coming out of this deal.
