The Call of Duty movie will be based on Modern Warfare

Earlier this year, we learned that the Call of Duty film in development at Paramount is targeting a Summer 2028 release date, but which era of the games the film would take inspiration from remained a mystery. That finally changed this week, with director Peter Berg revealing that the movie will be based on the Modern Warfare series.

The update comes via the official Call of Duty X account, confirming that the long‑running Modern Warfare era will serve as the foundation for the film. Modern Warfare has been one of the most recognisable and commercially successful branches of the franchise, spanning multiple titles across both the original Infinity Ward storyline and the more recent reboot.

While the film will be Modern Warfare‑focused, it remains unclear whether Paramount and Activision plan to adapt familiar characters and plotlines from the games, or whether the project will introduce an entirely original cast and narrative set within that universe. With the film still several years away, more details should emerge as production gets underway.

KitGuru Says: The Call of Duty campaigns have always offered incredible cinematic moments, so it will be interesting to see if the live action film can up the ante.
