The Lord of the Rings: Gollum delayed by ‘a few months’

While Daedalic Entertainment planned to finally launch its Gollum-focused Lord of the Rings game this year, it seems the team needs more time. After confirming a September release date just a couple of months ago, the game has now been delayed to an unspecified date.

In an update posted this week, Daedalic and Nacon announced that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been pushed back by “a few months”. The two companies also promised to shed some light on a new release date “in the near future”. With that in mind, Gollum could still make it out before the end of this year, but it could also slip into early 2023.

Described as a Stealth-Action title, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be releasing on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC on the 1st of September 2022. A Nintendo Switch version of the game is also planned, but it won't be available at launch.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was first announced back in 2019 as a stealth-action title. The game will focus on Gollum's efforts to steal the One Ring, and players will have to wrestle with Gollum's multiple personalities and make key story decisions along the way. The game description also gives us a tease of what to expect from the main story:

“After losing his precious ring to Bilbo Baggins, Gollum decides to leave the Misty Mountains and embarks on a perilous journey that leads him from the dungeons of Barad-dûr to the realm of the Wood-elves in Mirkwood. In order to survive the dangers on his journey through Middle-earth, Gollum has to sneak, climb and use all his cunning. He also has to deal with his more human side – Sméagol. It’s up to the players if they want Gollum to have the upper hand when it comes to making important decisions or let Sméagol take over. Gollum also encounters well-known characters from the books as well as a few new faces.”

The Lord of the Rings Gollum will launch on last-gen and current-gen Xbox and PlayStation consoles, as well as PC. A Nintendo Switch version is also planned but won't be available at launch.

KitGuru Says: Gollum won't be making its way out in September after all, which is a shame, as there was a nice release gap in September ahead of the holiday season rush. With that in mind, I'd expect a December launch if the game is still planned to release this year.
