While Zynga is primarily known as a mobile-focused games publisher, not too long ago, the company was working on a Star Wars game for consoles and PC. Now roughly one year on from its cancellation, gameplay footage of the project has leaked.
MP1st managed to get its hands on development reel footage of Star Wars: Magellan, the codename for a now cancelled Star Wars looter-shooter, in which players would team up in groups of three to take on massive waves of Star Wars enemies, from classic Storm Troopers to security droids.
The game would have had at least three playable classes – a Jedi, a Mandalorian and a Bounty Hunter … which isn't all that different from a Mandalorian. The Jedi character would have had access to powers like Lightsaber Throw and Force Push, while Mandalorians would have had access to gadgets like a jetpack and flamethrower.
Honestly based on the footage, it looked like the game still needed quite a bit of work before it would be ready for release. However, we'll never know how this game would have shaped up at launch, because it was cancelled when Zynga shutdown the subsidiary working on it, Echtra Games.
Fortunately, Star Wars fans do have a number of other titles to look forward to in the near future. Later this month, Star Wars: Zero Company launches, bringing some XCOM flavour to the Star Wars universe, with a full campaign set during the Clone Wars era. Beyond that, the KOTOR Remake is targeting a 2028 launch window and after that, KOTOR creator, Casey Hudson, has a spiritual successor coming out called Fate of the Old Republic.
KitGuru Says: I love Action RPGs, but in the classic sense – like Marvel's Ultimate Alliance. A Star Wars game built more like that would be incredible to see, rather than the looter shooter concept that Magellan ended up being.
