GTA V has now sold 165 million copies

Despite being nearly a decade old, Grand Theft Auto V continues to sell like hotcakes. As part of Take-Two Interactive’s most recent quarterly fiscal earnings report it was announced that the 2013 open world game has sold 165 million copies, making it almost as big as the entire Mario Kart franchise.

Take-Two interactive, the publisher responsible for the likes of GTA, Bioshock and Borderlands, recently released their quarterly fiscal earnings, with industry analyst Mike Futter reporting that “Take-Two sold another 5M copies of GTA V in the last quarter of the fiscal year,” with “total sell-in now at 165M.”

The previous quarter also saw GTA V sell 5 million copies, suggesting that the nearly 10 year old game has settled into a consistent rhythm of continuous sales. While it may never sell as many copies as the seemingly undefeatable Minecraft (which has managed 238 million units), GTA V on its own has outsold entire franchises including the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog (145 million); Madden NFL (130 million); Zelda (126 million) and NBA 2K (118 million). In fact, it is highly likely that by next quarter 2013’s GTA V will have on its own outsold the Mario Kart and Final Fantasy franchises (which have sold 166 and 168 million copies respectively).

With the Expanded and Enhanced edition of GTA V recently releasing we will likely see the game continue to sell for years to come. It will be interesting to see just how close it can get to Minecraft’s sales figures when all is said and done.
