Kojima addresses the ‘Abandoned’ horror game hoax

Back in 2021, many Kojima fans were convinced that the game creator’s next title was this seemingly innocuous indie horror game known as Abandoned. Announced as being developed by an entirely different studio and team, the game’s marketing drew many comparisons to previous Kojima games, sparking the rumour that Abandoned was indeed a secret Kojima project. Years on, we know this isn't the case, and Kojima himself has now spoken fully on the matter.

As part of his recent Brain Structure Podcast (and as transcribed by VGC), Kojima sat down with his friend and Game Awards creator Goeff Keighley to discuss all manner of topics including game rumours and the incorrect assessment that Blue Box Studios’ Abandoned game was in fact a Kojima project – and not made by Hasan Kahraman. According to Kojima:

“Users just kept sending me pictures of this ‘Hasan’. They still send me collages and deep fake images, like twenty a day, it's really quite a nuisance [laughs]. When we did that Moby Dick thing, you [Geoff] were in on the whole thing, and that was pretty fun, but people should know that I wouldn't do the same thing twice.”

Putting all this to bed, Kojima ended by saying “I have never spoken with Hasan, the game is yet to be released. I don't think there's much he can do or say at this point. But if he releases the game, people might understand, so maybe he should just hurry up and release it.”

As mentioned by Kojima himself, he has in the past announced games under fake names and studios and so ‘Abandoned’ secretly being a Kojima Production would make some sense. That being said, at this point it is more than clear that the two studios are not related.
