Minecraft looks to finally be getting native current-gen upgrades

Despite being by far the best selling videogame of all time, Minecraft has for the past 3 years been running on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with last-gen equivalent settings. Following a stealth update to the Xbox’s beta release, Minecraft looks set to finally get official current-gen ports.

As reported by PlayStation dataminer PlayStation Game Size, Minecraft is set to get a native PS5 version at some point in the not too distant future.

While the launch of the PS4 Pro saw Minecraft enhanced for that console’s improved hardware, it is still being held back in many ways – in particular when it comes to offering unique PS5 features.

Though we do not know the specifics, introducing a native PS5 version of Minecraft could allow for improved resolutions; framerates up to 120fps; increased render distances and DualSense enhancements – to list a few.

Theoretically, we could even finally see ray-tracing being added to the console versions…though don’t hold your breath.

The report comes in the wake of a stealth update introduced by Mojang for Xbox Series X|S, which added rudimentary Series X|S support – though no native version yet.

With how big Minecraft has been and continues to be, it is surprising to see the team taking so long to get out a native current-gen release. Then again, with over 300 million copies sold, they can afford to take their time.
