PlayStation hits new user record

One way in which console manufacturers measure the success and growth of their platforms is by looking at the number of monthly active users. In that respect, PlayStation has now announced that they have broken their previous record, amassing 123 million MAU in December last year.

Announced during CES (and reported by industry analyst ‘DomsPlaying’), Sony revealed that “PlayStation Network saw 123 million monthly active users (MAUs) during December 2023, a record for its ecosystem.”

For comparison, PlayStation in December 2022 saw 112 million MAUs. Xbox meanwhile had 120 million users in December 2022, with Steam taking the lead with 132 million during the same period.

While this does paint PlayStation in somewhat of a lower light, it is worth noting that unlike Xbox and Steam, Sony has a much smaller presence in the PC space – especially when it comes to games which require you to sign into your PlayStation Network account.

That said, it will be interesting to see what Steam and Xbox’s 2023 figures look like when they are officially announced at some point in the not too distant future. Regardless, it is safe to say that gaming is more popular than ever.
