Lenovo Legion 9i will pack the world’s thinnest water-cooler ever used in a laptop

The Legion 9i is an upcoming gaming laptop with high-end components, featuring an Intel Core i9-13980HX CPU and a GeForce RTX 4090 laptop GPU. This much power can be hard to cool in a laptop, regardless of its size, but Lenovo engineers were up to the challenge. Instead of going with a traditional cooling method with big heatsinks and fans, Lenovo developed the world’s thinnest water cooler, fitting it into an 18.9mm profile.

According to VideoCardz, Lenovo claims that the Legion 9i will have the world's smallest water cooling system. During the formal launch in China, a Lenovo representative displayed a slide describing how this cooling mechanism only kicks in after the machine hits 84°C, which removes the need for a liquid pump to operate at lighter loads.

Furthermore, even with three fans inside the chassis, there is enough room for a 4-cell 99.9 Wh battery, two M.2 2280 SSDs, and two DDR5-5600 DIMM slots (up to 64 GB). There's at least one model packing 64 GB of DDR5-5600 and two 1T M.2 2280 SSDs. Lenovo chose a 16.3-inch 2K IPS panel with a 165Hz refresh rate for the monitor, which the company calls a “PureSight Gaming” display. Earlier information said that it was a Mini-LED panel, but that wasn't confirmed yet.

There is no set release date for the Legion 9i yet, but production has already started. As such, we expect it to be available very soon.

KitGuru says: If proven good enough, there's a chance that other manufacturers will take inspiration from Lenovo's thin water-cooling system to use on their own laptops.
