Hearthstone hits 20 million player milestone

Who would have thought when Hearthstone launched officially earlier this year, that the next hugely popular, competitive title to hit the PC would be a collectible card game? Well you better believe it now, as Blizzard has released an image on Twitter to celebrate the fact that it now has over 20 million players.

“Thank you all for joining us in #Hearthstone! We're going to need a bigger tavern!” reads the tweet, along with the following image:

This is a particularly huge achievement considering the game has only been out of beta since early this year. Blizzard's previous behemoth franchisee, World of Warcraft, never hit 20 million players – though part of me wonders whether this latest figure represents downloaders, or regular players.

Either way though, the game has been a huge success, combining some clever collectible elements, with a free to play model to make something that resonates with a lot of people. Plenty play it for a quick competitive romp when they have a spare 10 minutes, while others delve deep into the deck building meta-game. There's even some expanded single player elements thanks to the Curse of Naxxramas expansion.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.

  1. And how many people play farmville? I got invited to the beta but when I realised it was a card game I un installed fast. What a heap of rubbish.

  2. Thats your first mistake. THinking that its rubbish because its a “Card Game” is very stupid considering its not the same as Magic The Gathering or any other card game. IF this game where to not have cards, but instead it being normal units and spells. you would prolly play it. But since its in card form, you automatically assume its rubbish/uninteresting. Maybe try it before posting such bullshit. Or maybe you dislike games like these because you are bad in Strategic games.

Oh, and on your farmville comment, those people arent “Gamers”, they are mindless facebook sheep looking to pass time. Farmville, not to be compared to actual games.
