Sony expects PlayStation 4 to bring more profits than the PS2

Kazuo Hirai, chief executive officer of Sony Corp., believes that the company’s new-generation PlayStation 4 game console could eventually bring more money than the legendary PlayStation 2. While the PS4 will unlikely outsell the PS2 in terms of unit sales, thanks to PlayStation Network services it can leave its ancestor behind when it comes to revenue and profits.

“It is likely that PS4 will become the platform which exceeds the profits earned with PS2,” said Kazuo Hirai at a meeting with investors last week, reports GamesIndustry.

The PlayStation 2 was the best-selling game console ever. Sony shipped around 155 million PS2 units in more than ten years, it is unlikely that sales of the PlayStation 4 will ever reach this figure. However, thanks to the fact that Sony can unlock revenue streams that did not exist when the PlayStation 2 was released in 2000, it is possible that the PS4 will indeed bring higher profits to the conglomerate that lost $1.24 billion (around £736 million) last fiscal year.

So far Sony has sold over seven million PlayStation 4 units worldwide. About half of the PS4 owners also use the PSN services.

KitGuru Says: Unfortunately for Sony, while the PlayStation business may be thriving, other businesses of the giant are losing money. Moreover, the management of the company expects it to lose $500 million (about £296.8 million) again this fiscal year.
