Grand Theft Auto 5 takes £500 million in first day

Grand Theft Auto 5, one of the greatest games released this year has taken in more than £500 million on the first day of sales, according to the publisher.

Take Two interactive has said that Grand Theft Auto 5 ‘delivered the highest first day retail sales of any title in the history of the company and the Grand Theft Auto series.'

Strauss Zelnick, chairman and chief executive of Take Two said ‘All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at (the unit) Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence.'

Even though online stores such as Amazon sent out the game 3 or 4 days before official launch retail stores worldwide opened at midnight to meet the demand from gamers. First day totals don't include the upcoming launch in Japan and Brazil.

RockStar Games had a budget of $270 million to create the game, which is more than some A list Hollywood movies. One of the UK stories says that a man was stabbed and his copy stolen, minutes after he picked it up in a supermarket.

So far reviews of the game have been immensely positive – the Metacritic average score is 97 out of 100 so far.

Kitguru says: Rockstar made more than their development money back, on the first day alone!
