SEGA files trademark for Ecco the Dolphin

In recent years, we’ve seen SEGA begin to embrace its varied history of IPs from back when the publisher was still producing consoles. Following official confirmation of the return of Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi and more, it seems SEGA is also working on a new entry in the underrated Ecco the Dolphin series.

As reported by Gematsu, a trademark listing for the terms Ecco and Ecco the Dolphin have been filed in Japan by SEGA, indicating that the publisher is set to bring this long-dormant franchise back.

Little else is known about the trademark beyond this, however, new leaks have suggested that we might get a first look at this unannounced game during the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct on the 23rd of January.

According to Windows Central, said Direct will include “a new entry in a legendary Japanese IP which has decades of history, and should make a lot of fans happy.”

While not confirmed, the recent trademark (and teasers released by the Xbox team) seem to indicate that an official announcement could be coming sooner rather than later.

Ecco the Dolphin is a weird-yet-underrated series, and so it is exciting to see SEGA willing to embrace more of its unique past IPs.
