An Elder Scrolls Oblivion remake is reportedly on the way

For years, there have been rumours about Bethesda remastering some of its older classics but so far, nothing has come to fruition. That may change in 2025, as reputable sources claim that a new version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is on the way. 

The original Oblivion still has a lot of charm to this day and to a lot of Elder Scrolls lore nerds, it is even better than Skyrim. According to reputable leaker, Extas1s, an Oblivion Remake is being developed by Virtuos, recreating the game in Unreal Engine 5, rather than a newer version of Bethesda's Creation Engine. That decision could be a deliberate one, as modding groups have already been trying to develop upgraded versions of titles like Morrowwind and Oblivion using newer Creation Engine tools.

By doing things this way, Bethesda can avoid stepping on the toes of the modding community, a nice gesture considering the modding community is a core part of the continued success of many Bethesda games.

Extas1s isn't the only source claiming that the Oblivion remake is on the way. Klobrille, perhaps the biggest name in the Xbox online community and someone who has a number of relationships with Xbox Game Studios employees, has also teased a remake.

While there are two reputable sources here, people do get sent wrong information all the time. With that in mind, don't get too excited about this idea just yet. However, it is claimed that the remake could be announced as early as next month, so we'll be keeping our fingers crossed for more news from Microsoft in late January / early February.

KitGuru Says: I've been replaying Oblivion recently on my Steam Deck. While I'm not super on top of Elder Scrolls lore, I've always loved the main campaign and the faction quests in this game. If it is true that the remake will be built in UE5 though, I do worry about the prospect of the game losing some of its charm, but at the end of the day, the original version of the game will always exist and hardcore fans can install a plethora of mods to get the game looking a bit more modern.
