Valve to develop games for Wii U?

Valve co-founder Gabe Newell spoke to Joystiq at the 2011 Games For Change Festival and was happy to give his views on the upcoming Nintendo Wii U console.

He said that the new Wii U console “sort of fits better into the scalability in terms of graphics performance and CPU performance”. He added that the advantages can help ‘fit it' into Valve's own model for development scalability.

Reading between the lines it looks as if Newell will want to start developing a game for the new Nintendo console. We would imagine this might be a port of a current game, rather than something exclusive just for the new platform, however it is a good indication that software houses do find the upcoming hardware to be attractive. Newell also said that he ‘always loved Nintendo', indicating that he acknowledges the companies goal for making really fun games.

It appears that Nintendo's initial goals of wanting to make the console attractive to games developers has paid off, with high profile Newell very keen to go on record supporting the hardware. With Valve already on board in a public manner, it looks as if Nintendo will have a good chance of getting market share when the new Wii U is released.
